Goji berry or wolf berry is rich in antioxidants and is a nutrient-rich fruit. Although people of China and Mongolia have been using this fruit for ages now, it has recently caught the attention of the west, so much so that its popularity has resulted in the Goji Berry Superfood being made available in the form of supplements across the world. The following are a few benefits of this traditional fruit:
- Provides protection from sun: Researchers of University of Sydney have published findings in a journal that goji berries was seen to reduce induced sunburn reaction by supporting skin’s immune response. The antioxidants in berries were the reason why this protection was provided.
- Aphrodisiac: Goji berry is known traditionally to raise sexual interest and desire. It has fertility enhancement qualities have been in use in Tibet for thousands of years. Researchers from the Wuhan University in China found that constituents of goji berry regulated the release of sexual hormones, boosting of hormone levels, and increased concentration of sperm. Goji berry is known to enhance male fertility.
- Nutritional value: Goji berries contain many nutrients which support the proper functioning of body including normal metabolic processes. The fruit contains 19 amino acids, 21 trace minerals, protein, vitamin C, the B family of vitamins, vitamin E and essential fatty acids.
- Eyes protection: Goji berries may help protect the retina of the eyes. It contains zeaxanthin, which is a compound related to vitamin A. This compound becomes concentrated in the macular tissue of the eye and may protect the retina. Deterioration of the retina with age is one of the main causes of vision damage in elderly.
